# Body doubling online for free: every option compared

You can body double online for free in at least six ways: Focusmate's free plan, the Study Together server on Discord, FLOWN's free account, a YouTube "study with me" stream, a call with a friend, and Roomie Cafe. Each one is free in a different way, and each has a limit that decides whether you will still be using it in a month.

Roomie Cafe is a free focus timer you share with friends. We make it, so we are not neutral. Every fact about the other options below comes from that product's own site, checked on 21 October 2026, and where another option is the better fit we say so.

If you are new to the idea, start with [what body doubling is and why it helps](/blog/what-is-body-doubling). This post is the practical list.

## What are the free ways to body double online?

| Option | Camera | Schedule needed | Cost | Best for |
| --- | --- | --- | --- | --- |
| Focusmate free plan | Required [1] | Yes, you book a session [1] | Free for 3 sessions a week, then $8 to $12 a month [2] | A fixed appointment with one partner, a few times a week |
| Study Together on Discord | Optional: camera, screen share or chat [3] | No | Free sign up [4] | Students who like a big, busy room |
| FLOWN free account | Not stated | Yes, sessions run on a calendar [5] | 30 day free trial, then free on Fridays or a paid membership [5] | Trying guided sessions before paying |
| YouTube study with me | No | No, though livestreams run at set times | Free | One way company with no account |
| A call with a friend | Your choice | Yes, you agree on a time | Free | Hard tasks where you need someone you trust |
| Roomie Cafe | No | No | Free, no session limit | Daily focus with friends, without video |

The rest of this post goes through them one at a time.

## Is Focusmate free?

Partly. Focusmate pairs you with one other person on a live video call for 25, 50 or 75 minutes. Its FAQ says it "is completely free for up to three sessions per week," and you do not need to enter payment details to start [1]. Unlimited sessions come with the Plus plan, which costs $8 a month billed yearly or $12 billed monthly [2].

The limits are the camera and the calendar. Focusmate's FAQ states that "a camera is necessary," and you book each session ahead of time [1]. Three sessions a week is enough to get a stuck project moving. It is not enough for daily work unless you pay.

Focusmate is the better choice when what gets you started is a specific person expecting you at a specific time. We compared it with Roomie Cafe in detail in [Focusmate vs Roomie Cafe](/blog/focusmate-vs-roomie-cafe).

## Are there free body doubling groups on Discord?

Yes. The biggest is Study Together. Its Discord listing calls it "the largest study and productivity server on Discord" and shows more than 1,080,000 members on the day we checked. The same listing says you study with others "via camera, screenshare or chat" [3]. The Study Together website offers a free account and says the community is now part of StudyStream [4].

What you get is a large room that is always open. You join a voice channel and work. Nobody books anything.

The limits come from the size. You are with strangers, and Discord itself is full of messages that pull your attention. If you already live in Discord, this is the easiest free option to try.

## Does FLOWN have free sessions?

FLOWN runs virtual coworking with facilitated sessions, peer sessions and a drop in room that its site describes as available 24/7 with no speaking [5]. New members get a 30 day free trial with no payment details. After the trial you choose a monthly, yearly or lifetime membership, or you keep using FLOWN "for free every Friday" with its free account [5].

So FLOWN is free for a month, then one day a week. We could not find FLOWN's camera rules on the pages we checked, so we have left that cell blank in the table.

## Do YouTube body doubling videos work?

They work for a lot of people. Search YouTube for "study with me" or "body doubling" and you will find recorded sessions and livestreams of people working at a desk, often with a timer on screen. In a 2023 survey of 220 people who body double, researchers listed YouTube among the ways people do it, next to working in a café [6].

A video is one way presence. Nobody knows you are there, so nobody notices when you drift off to your phone. The same study describes body doubling as a range, from quiet company in the background to active accountability [6], and YouTube sits at the quiet end. It is free, needs no account and suits chores and routine work.

## Can you body double with a friend on a video or voice call?

Yes, and it costs nothing. Open FaceTime, Google Meet, Zoom or a Discord call with a friend, say what you are each going to do, mute, and work. Check in at the end.

This is the strongest form of accountability on the list, because the person waiting for you is someone you know. The limit is coordination. You both need to be free at the same time, every time. If you keep the camera on, there is also a cost. In a four week field experiment with 103 employees and 1,408 daily observations, people were more tired on the days they kept their cameras on in meetings, and the effect was stronger for women and newer employees [7]. Jeremy Bailenson at Stanford has argued that video calls overload us with nonverbal signals, while noting that his arguments still need direct testing [8]. A voice call or a muted call with the camera off avoids most of it.

## Is there free body doubling without a camera or a schedule?

That is what we built Roomie Cafe for. You press start, pick what you are working on (a focus area) and a length from 5 to 90 minutes. You see who else is focusing right now. Nobody sees or hears you: there is no webcam, no microphone and nothing to book. Other people see your name, what you are working on and your timer.

When the timer ends you write one line about what you got done, and friends can cheer you on. Roomie Cafe is free with no limit on sessions. There is an optional [Supporter plan](/pricing) at €3.33 a month or €33 a year, which adds a gold star next to your name and a few extra perks. It runs on the web at [roomie.cafe](/) and as an [iPhone, iPad and Mac app](/app). On Android you use the browser for now.

The limit is the other side of having no camera. Nobody is waiting for you at 9:00, so if only a booked appointment will get you to the desk, Focusmate or a friend on a call will do more for you. Roomie Cafe works best when you mainly want company while you work every day, with nothing to arrange first. There is more on that trade in [body doubling without a camera](/blog/body-doubling-without-a-camera).

## Which free option should you pick?

Start from what usually stops you.

* **You never start unless someone expects you.** Use Focusmate's three free sessions for your hardest tasks, or book a call with a friend.
* **You hate being on camera.** Use YouTube, a Discord voice channel without video, or Roomie Cafe.
* **Your schedule changes every day.** Skip anything that needs booking. Discord, YouTube and Roomie Cafe all work the moment you are ready.
* **You want to work with friends, not strangers.** A call with a friend, or Roomie Cafe, where the people you follow show up when they are focusing.
* **You want to try a guided session.** FLOWN's 30 day trial costs nothing.

You can also combine them, for example one Focusmate session for the task you dread and a quieter option for the rest of the week. If you have ADHD, see [body doubling for ADHD](/blog/body-doubling-for-adhd), and talk to a clinician about treatment.

## How good is the evidence for online body doubling?

Thin, and you should know that before you pay for anything. There are no randomized trials of body doubling. The survey above is one of the few academic studies, and it found that most participants had used the technique long before they learned its name [6]. A review of 241 studies on working in front of others found small effects: company sped up simple tasks and slowed down complex ones [9]. We explain that research in [why focusing alone is harder](/blog/why-focusing-alone-is-harder). So try a free option for a week and judge by what you get done.
