Focusmate pairs you with one stranger on video at a time you book, for $8 to $12 a month after 3 free sessions a week. Flow Club puts you in a hosted video session of up to 9 people, for $40 a month after a free trial. Pick Focusmate if a single person expecting you is what gets you working. Pick Flow Club if a small group with a host carries you and you will use it most workdays.

We make [Roomie Cafe](/), a free focus timer you share with friends, so we are not neutral in this category. This comparison uses only what Focusmate and Flow Club say on their own sites, checked in October 2026, and our longer [Focusmate review](/blog/focusmate-review) and [Flow Club review](/blog/flow-club-review) have the sources for every line. The current prices for these and five other apps are on our [compare page](/compare).

## How the sessions differ

**Focusmate is an appointment.** You pick a slot, Focusmate finds a partner, and ten minutes before the start a join button appears. You say hello, say what you will do, work in silence, and tell each other how it went. The community guidelines ask for your camera on and your real name, and a timeliness score drops if you are late or absent, because someone was waiting for you [2]. You can favorite partners you liked and book them again.

**Flow Club is a meeting.** You book a session from a schedule and get a calendar invite. A host welcomes the group, everyone says what they are working on, a timer runs while the room works muted, and at the end the host asks how it went. Sessions run from 30 minutes to 3 hours, with 60 minutes the most popular length [3]. Hosts are members, not staff, and you can become one after 10 sessions.

The practical difference is pressure. On Focusmate one person is holding you to it, and most people say that is why it works and why they sometimes avoid booking. On Flow Club the room is bigger and the host carries the structure, so a bad day is less personal.

## Price: five times apart

Focusmate Plus costs $8 a month billed yearly or $12 billed monthly, and the free plan's 3 sessions a week is a real plan you can stay on [1]. Flow Club costs $40 a month or $400 a year, which is about $33 a month, and there is no free plan once the trial ends [4]. Flow Club's own pricing notes that students, nonprofit workers and hosts who run 10 sessions a month pay half [5].

Per session the gap narrows if you go often. Five Flow Club sessions a week comes to about $2 a session; one a week is about $10. Focusmate Plus at daily use is well under a dollar a session.

## Camera and talking

Focusmate requires the camera on for the whole session, and its guidelines ask you to stay in frame [2]. Quiet Mode lets you type instead of talk if you are in a library, but video stays on.

Flow Club asks you to keep video on "as much as you can" and says it is fine to turn it off when you need to [3]. Tiles are small and you can blur the background. If you would rather not speak at all, it runs chat only sessions.

If any camera at all is the problem, neither is the right tool. See [body doubling without a camera](/blog/body-doubling-without-a-camera).

## Choose Focusmate if

* A specific person expecting you at a specific time is what gets you into the chair.
* You want to pay little, or nothing, and 3 sessions a week is enough.
* You are fine on camera with a stranger and like the 25 or 50 minute rhythm.

## Choose Flow Club if

* Group energy and a host running the session help you more than one partner.
* You will join most workdays, so $40 a month is spread over many sessions.
* You want to turn the camera off some days without breaking a rule.

## A free option with neither camera nor booking

[Roomie Cafe](/) is the one we make. You press a timer, see which friends are focusing right now, and write one line about what you got done. No camera, no microphone, nothing to book, and free with no session limit. It gives you less pressure than a Focusmate partner and less structure than a Flow Club host, which is the point for some people and a drawback for others. Plenty of people use it alongside one of the two above: a booked session for the task they dread, a quiet timer for the rest of the day.
