StudyStream is a free app and website with live study rooms that are open 24/7, where students study on camera alongside strangers with microphones muted. The free plan gives you 1 hour of focus room time a day; Basic raises that to 4 hours and Premium removes the cap. It suits students who like a big, busy room.
That is the short version. Below we go through how the rooms work, what the camera really involves, what each plan costs, and who would be happier with something else.
Roomie Cafe is a free focus timer you share with friends. We make it, so we are not a neutral reviewer, and we have not used StudyStream as a paying member. Everything about StudyStream here comes from its own website, help center, blog and app store listings, checked on 22 October 2026. Where we could not confirm something, we left it out.
What is StudyStream?
StudyStream is a study community run by Knowledge Collective, the company that publishes the iPhone and Android apps [2, 3]. Its core product is the focus room: a live video room, open around the clock, where people join to study or work in silence next to each other [1].
It started in 2021 as a set of always-open focus rooms on Zoom, where students were encouraged to turn on their camera and study with up to 1,000 others [10]. Today the rooms run inside StudyStream's own web app and mobile apps [2, 3, 7].
StudyStream also absorbed an older community. The Study Together website says "StudyTogether is now part of StudyStream" and sends new sign-ups to StudyStream [9]. If you knew Study Together from its Discord server, that is the same family of rooms under one brand now.
Studying in silence next to other people is a form of body doubling. If that idea is new to you, our guide to studying with friends online covers the basics.
How StudyStream's focus rooms work
You sign in, pick a focus room and start working. StudyStream's own guide describes the routine in four steps: log in, join a focus room, turn on your camera, start working [6]. Microphones stay muted, so the room is quiet; the company says most people keep their cameras on "to create a sense of shared presence" [6].
The rooms are large. Snapshots of the web app show hundreds of people online in a single room at once, though that number moves through the day [7]. That scale is the main appeal: whenever you open it, someone is already studying.
Features beyond the rooms
According to StudyStream's app listings, help center and blog, you also get:
- A Pomodoro timer. A built-in timer inside the focus rooms. You choose an activity, set a length and press play, and it tells you when to take a break. The default is 25 minutes of work and 5 minutes of rest [8].
- Tasks and streaks. The apps track tasks and daily study streaks [2, 3].
- Study partners. You can pin people who keep you accountable and see their streaks. Free accounts can pin up to 4 people, Basic 20 and Premium 40 [3, 4].
- A social feed and chat. The iPhone app lists a social feed for finding student groups [2]. Starting new conversations needs a paid plan [4].
- AI study tools. The iPhone listing mentions AI notes and quizzes [2].
We could not find a clear, current description of a long-term statistics dashboard on StudyStream's own pages, so we are not listing one.
Do you need a camera on StudyStream?
No, but cameras on is the norm. The iPhone app describes its rooms as live video study rooms "with cameras on" for motivation [2]. StudyStream's safety guide is just as clear in the other direction: no one should be forced to turn their video on when they enter a focus room, and you should not use your camera if you do not want to [5].
Two details are worth knowing before you switch it on:
- Rooms are public. The focus room page says anyone in the room can see your camera, including people who are not signed in [7]. Check what is behind you and on your desk.
- Camera off still uses your daily time. On the free plan, all of your focus room time counts toward the 1 hour limit, including time with your camera off or with the room open in a background tab [4].
If the camera is the hard part for you, there is a reason. In a field study of 103 employees over four weeks, people felt more tired on days they kept their camera on in meetings [14]. A silent study room is gentler than a meeting, but seeing your own face for an hour still costs something. We look at this in body doubling without a camera.
How much does StudyStream cost?
StudyStream has three tiers [4]:
The daily timer resets at midnight in your account's time zone [4]. The help center says there are currently no student discounts, regional discounts or free trials, and that annual billing is cheaper than monthly [4].
On the US App Store, Premium is listed at $6.99 a month or $69.99 a year [2]. Basic is also listed there as a monthly in-app purchase, but the help center does not publish a fixed Basic price, and app store prices vary by country, so check the plans page in the app for what you would pay [2, 4]. Prices checked on 22 October 2026.
StudyStream pros and cons
Pros
- Rooms are open 24/7, so there is always someone studying, whatever your time zone [1].
- Free to try, with no booking: open a room and start.
- Muted microphones keep it quiet [6].
- The camera is optional, even though most people turn it on [5, 6].
- A built-in Pomodoro timer, tasks and streaks keep the basics in one place [2, 8].
- Apps for iPhone and Android as well as the web [2, 3].
Cons
- The free plan caps you at 1 hour of room time a day, which is less than one long study session [4].
- No student discount or free trial for the paid plans [4].
- Rooms are public, so if your camera is on, strangers and signed-out visitors can see you [7].
- The room is full of strangers. Pinning study partners helps, but the product is built around large public rooms rather than your own circle of friends.
- A big room is easy to ignore. Nobody notices if you leave early, which is fine for some people and a problem for others.
Who StudyStream is great for
StudyStream fits you well if:
- You study at odd hours and want company at 3 a.m.
- A busy room of strangers motivates you more than one partner would.
- You are comfortable on camera, or happy to sit in the room with it off.
- An hour a day is enough, or $6.99 a month for unlimited time feels fair.
Who would prefer something else
You might want a different tool if:
- You would rather study with your own friends. StudyStream is built around large public rooms. If you want to see when your classmates are studying, a tool built for friends fits better.
- You do not want a camera in the picture at all. Even with yours off, you are in a video room watching other people's cameras.
- You need one person expecting you. A booked partner is a stronger push than a crowd. We cover that format in our Focusmate review.
- You have ADHD and struggle to start. A big room can help, but some people need a smaller, more personal nudge. Our guide on how to focus with ADHD has other ideas.
StudyStream alternatives
A few notes on each:
- Focumon turns study sessions into a game where you collect pixel creatures, with group sessions and parties of up to 6 players. It says it is free for everyone, with no ads or microtransactions, and offers an optional Pro Pass [12].
- Forest grows a tree while you stay off your phone. Plant Together lets a group share one session, and Forest says its free tier includes group focus with friends [11].
- YouTube "study with me" videos are the zero-commitment option. In a CHI 2021 study that combined an analysis of 30 videos with interviews of 12 viewers, people said they used them to set a pleasant ambience and to feel a mild, controllable kind of peer pressure [13]. You get company, but nobody knows you are there.

Where Roomie Cafe fits
Roomie Cafe is the option for people who want StudyStream's sense of "someone else is studying too", but with friends instead of strangers and without a camera. You press start, pick what you are working on and a length from 5 to 90 minutes, and you see who else is focusing right now. There is no webcam, no microphone and nothing to book.
When the timer ends you write one line about what you got done, and friends can cheer you on. It is free with no limit on sessions, runs on the web and as an iPhone, iPad and Mac app, and has an optional Supporter plan if you want to back it.
It will not give you a room of 500 people at 3 a.m. If that is what keeps you going, StudyStream does it well.
