When the Pomodoro rhythm helps most
Starting a task you have put off for days
Studying for exams across a long day
Writing when the blank page feels heavy
Working from home without anyone around
Breaking a big project into countable rounds
Keeping breaks short so they do not turn into an afternoon
How the Pomodoro Technique works
Francesco Cirillo developed the Pomodoro Technique in the late 1980s as a university student, using a tomato shaped kitchen timer. Pomodoro is Italian for tomato, and each 25 minute round is called a pomodoro.
The rules are short: pick a task, work for one pomodoro, take a short break, and after four pomodoros take a longer one. Counting rounds instead of hours makes progress visible and keeps breaks from stretching.
Focus is easier next to someone
Roomie Cafe is the same kind of timer, shared with friends. You see who else is focusing right now and write one line about what you got done when the timer ends. No webcam, nothing to book, free with no session limit.
Questions about the timer
How long is a Pomodoro?
A classic pomodoro is 25 minutes of focus followed by a 5 minute break. After four rounds you take a longer break, usually 15 to 30 minutes.
How do I switch between focus and breaks?
Use the Focus, Short break and Long break buttons above the timer, then press start. Each mode chimes when it ends.
Can I change the Pomodoro length?
This page uses the classic 25, 5 and 15 minute lengths. For longer focus, try the 50 minute timer, which pairs 50 minutes of work with a 10 minute break.
Is this Pomodoro timer free?
Yes. It is free, works in any modern browser and needs no account or download.
