The best discipline quotes are short, true to their source and point at one next action. "Inspiration is for amateurs; the rest of us just show up and get to work" (Chuck Close, 2006) is a good example. Below are 36 quotes checked against the original book, letter or interview, sorted by mood, plus the famous ones that are misattributed.
Most quote lists copy each other, so the same mistakes travel. We left out anything we could not trace to a source, and we say so when a line is a translation or a paraphrase.
Roomie Cafe is a free focus timer you share with friends. We make it, and the whole point of this list is to get you from a quote to a started timer, so we come back to it near the end.
For when you can't start
- "Well begun is half done; dare to be wise; begin!" Horace, Epistles 1.2, lines 40–41 (about 20 BC; H. R. Fairclough's translation, 1926) [1]
- "While we are postponing, life speeds by." Seneca, Moral Letters to Lucilius, Letter 1 (R. M. Gummere's translation) [2]
- "At dawn, when you have trouble getting out of bed, tell yourself: 'I have to go to work — as a human being.'" Marcus Aurelius, Meditations 5.1 (Gregory Hays's translation, 2002)
- "It's not the writing part that's hard. What's hard is sitting down to write." Steven Pressfield, The War of Art (2002)
- "The more important a call or action is to our soul's evolution, the more Resistance we will feel toward pursuing it." Steven Pressfield, The War of Art (2002)
- "Inspiration is for amateurs — the rest of us just show up and get to work." Chuck Close, interviewed by Joe Fig in 2006, published in Inside the Painter's Studio (2009) [3]
- "First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable. Habit will sustain you whether you're inspired or not." Octavia E. Butler, "Furor Scribendi", reprinted in Bloodchild and Other Stories (1995) [4]
- "Bird by bird, buddy." Anne Lamott's father, to her ten-year-old brother, stuck on a report due the next day, in Bird by Bird (1994)
- "It's like driving a car at night: you never see further than your headlights, but you can make the whole trip that way." E. L. Doctorow, on writing, The Paris Review, "The Art of Fiction No. 94" (1986) [5]
- "A journey of a thousand miles begins beneath one's feet." Laozi, Tao Te Ching, chapter 64. The familiar "with a single step" is a loose rendering; the Chinese says the journey starts from the ground under your feet [6].
- "Nothing is so fatiguing as the eternal hanging on of an uncompleted task." William James, letter to Carl Stumpf, 1 January 1886, in The Letters of William James (1920)
Your next action: close this tab and lock in for 25 minutes on the smallest piece of the task. If starting is the hard part for you, our guide to why you procrastinate explains what is going on.
For the halfway slump
- "The best way is always to stop when you are going good and when you know what will happen next. If you do that every day when you are writing a novel you will never be stuck." Ernest Hemingway, "Monologue to the Maestro", Esquire (October 1935)
- "No great thing is created suddenly, any more than a bunch of grapes or a fig." Epictetus, Discourses 1.15 (T. W. Higginson's translation)
- "Ever tried. Ever failed. No matter. Try again. Fail again. Fail better." Samuel Beckett, Worstward Ho (1983).
- "Courage doesn't always roar. Sometimes courage is the quiet voice at the end of the day saying, 'I will try again tomorrow.'" Mary Anne Radmacher, Courage Doesn't Always Roar
- "Repetition itself becomes the important thing; it's a form of mesmerism." Haruki Murakami, on his daily writing routine, The Paris Review, "The Art of Fiction No. 182" (2004)
- "Genius is one per cent inspiration and ninety-nine per cent perspiration." Thomas Edison. He used several ratios over the years, and the idea was in print before him [7].
- "Great things are not done by impulse, but by a series of small things brought together." Vincent van Gogh, letter to his brother Theo, 22 October 1882. Condensed: both halves are in the letter, but not side by side [8].
Your next action: do not switch tasks. Write the next step on paper, make it smaller, and start another 25-minute block.
For the long game
- "We are what we repeatedly do. Excellence, then, is not an act, but a habit." Will Durant, The Story of Philosophy (1926), summarising Aristotle. This is Durant's wording, not Aristotle's [9].
- "We become just by doing just acts, temperate by doing temperate acts, brave by doing brave acts." Aristotle, Nicomachean Ethics, Book II (W. D. Ross's translation). This is the real Aristotle behind Durant's line [10].
- "How we spend our days is, of course, how we spend our lives." Annie Dillard, The Writing Life (1989).
- "You do not rise to the level of your goals. You fall to the level of your systems." James Clear, Atomic Habits (2018)
- "Every action you take is a vote for the type of person you wish to become." James Clear, Atomic Habits (2018)
- "It is not that we have a short space of time, but that we waste much of it." Seneca, On the Shortness of Life (J. W. Basore's translation, 1932). The popular "we waste a lot of it" is a modern paraphrase.
- "Dost thou love life? Then do not squander time, for that's the stuff life is made of." Benjamin Franklin, as Poor Richard, in "The Way to Wealth" (1758) [11]
- "Discipline is the bridge between thoughts and accomplishment." Jim Rohn, 7 Strategies for Wealth & Happiness (1980s). The popular "goals and accomplishment" is a later variant [12].
- "First tell yourself what kind of person you want to be, then do what you have to do." Epictetus, Discourses 3.23 (Ryan Holiday and Stephen Hanselman's translation in The Daily Stoic, 2016)
- "You wake up in the morning, and lo! your purse is magically filled with twenty-four hours of the unmanufactured tissue of the universe of your life!" Arnold Bennett, How to Live on 24 Hours a Day (1908)
Your next action: pick one time tomorrow when you will do this again, and write it down where you will see it.
Short discipline quotes for a sticky note
- "Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare." Angela Duckworth, Grit (2016)
- "Discipline equals freedom." Jocko Willink, the title of his 2017 book
- "80 percent of success is showing up." Woody Allen, confirming the line in a 1989 letter to William Safire. It was first printed in 1977, quoted by his co-writer Marshall Brickman [13].
- "Hard choices, easy life. Easy choices, hard life." Jerzy Gregorek, as quoted by Naval Ravikant in The Almanack of Naval Ravikant (2020)
- "What you do every day matters more than what you do once in a while." Gretchen Rubin, "Secrets of Adulthood" (2009) [14]
- "Procrastination is the thief of time." Edward Young, Night Thoughts (1742). Charles Dickens made it famous through Mr Micawber in David Copperfield, but the line is Young's [15].
- "Dripping water hollows out stone." Ovid, Epistulae ex Ponto 4.10.5 (gutta cavat lapidem)
- "Lost time is never found again." Benjamin Franklin, "The Way to Wealth" (1758) [11]
Your next action: write one of these on a sticky note, put it on the edge of your screen, and start the timer before you look at anything else.
Popular discipline quotes that are misattributed
These appear on almost every list. They are fine sayings, just not from the person on the poster.
We also could not trace these to any source, so if you use them, write "attributed to": "Don't count the days, make the days count" (Muhammad Ali), "Motivation is what gets you started. Habit is what keeps you going" (Jim Ryun) and "Start where you are. Use what you have. Do what you can" (Arthur Ashe).
How to actually use a quote
A quote gives you about two minutes of resolve. Use them:
- Pick one quote that matches how you feel right now. Not five. One.
- Write the next action under it. Make it physical and small: "Open the draft and write the first paragraph", not "work on the essay".
- Start a timer before you do anything else. 25 minutes is enough.
- When it ends, write one line about where you got.
That is what people mean by locking in: deciding to give one task your full attention for a set time. If you have ADHD and you freeze in front of the task, a quote will not fix it; our guide to ADHD paralysis covers what helps, and a clinician is the right person to talk to.
Where Roomie Cafe fits
Roomie Cafe is the timer part of that ritual, with company. You press start, pick what you are working on and a length from 5 to 90 minutes, and you see who else is focusing right now. There is no webcam, no microphone and nothing to book. When the timer ends you write one line about what you got done, and friends can cheer you on.
It runs on the web and as an iPhone, iPad and Mac app, and it is free with no limit on sessions. Any timer works; what matters is that the quote turns into a session.
FAQ
What is a good quote about discipline?
One that is short, verified and points at action, like Octavia Butler's "First forget inspiration. Habit is more dependable."
Who said "discipline is the bridge between goals and accomplishment"?
It is commonly attributed to the motivational speaker Jim Rohn (1930–2009). The earliest version in his own book, 7 Strategies for Wealth & Happiness, reads "the bridge between thoughts and accomplishment"; "goals" appears in later reprints of the line [12].
Did Aristotle say "we are what we repeatedly do"?
No. Will Durant wrote it in The Story of Philosophy (1926) as a summary of Aristotle's ideas. Aristotle's own version, in the Nicomachean Ethics, is that we become just by doing just acts [9][10].
Did Abraham Lincoln say "discipline is choosing between what you want now and what you want most"?
No. The earliest known version is a 2006 newsgroup post, long after Lincoln's death; it was being credited to him online by 2013 [16].
What is a short discipline quote?
"Discipline equals freedom" (Jocko Willink), "Enthusiasm is common. Endurance is rare" (Angela Duckworth) and "Well begun is half done" (Horace) all fit on a sticky note.
How do I stay disciplined when I'm not motivated?
Stop waiting for the feeling. Pick the smallest next action, start a 25-minute timer and work next to someone if you can.
