FLOWN runs facilitated group sessions and a silent drop in room open all day, for about €18 to €24 a month after a 30 day trial. Focusmate books you one partner on video for 25, 50 or 75 minutes, for $8 to $12 a month after 3 free sessions a week. Pick FLOWN if you want someone to run the session and a room you can walk into any time. Pick Focusmate if one person expecting you is the push you need, and you want to pay less.
We make Roomie Cafe, a free focus timer you share with friends, so we have a stake in this category. Everything below comes from FLOWN's and Focusmate's own sites, checked in October 2026; our FLOWN review and Focusmate review carry the full sources. Current prices for these and five other apps are on our compare page.
FLOWN vs Focusmate at a glance
How the sessions differ
FLOWN is a programme. Its Access to Work page lists four main formats [1]. A Deep Dive is 2 hours: goal setting in a breakout room of 3 or 4, two 50 minute focus blocks, an optional guided break, then reflection. A Power Hour is 55 minutes of silent work with goals in the chat. A Take Off is 20 minutes of meditation, journaling and sharing your plan for the day. The Drop In is a silent room open around the clock where you write your goal in the sidebar and work. Facilitators are handpicked and trained, with backgrounds in coaching, mindfulness and ADHD support [2].
Focusmate is a pairing. You book a slot, get matched, greet your partner on video, say your goal, work in silence and check in at the end. The structure is the appointment and the person, nothing more. Favorites let you rebook partners you liked, and Quiet Mode lets you type instead of talk [4, 5].
If you want a host setting the tone and a wellbeing layer around the work, FLOWN does that. If you want the fewest moving parts and a strong personal push, Focusmate does that.
Price and free plans
FLOWN showed us €24 a month, €18 a month billed yearly, or €860 once for lifetime access, after a 30 day trial that needs no card [3]. Students get 50% off. After the trial, FLOWN Free keeps a limited door open: the pricing page describes it as 4 community sessions a month plus any sessions on Fridays [3].
Focusmate Plus costs $8 a month billed yearly or $12 billed monthly, and the free plan of 3 sessions a week is permanent [4].
If you are in the UK and have a disability or health condition, FLOWN has a page on paying for membership through the Access to Work grant [1].
Camera rules
FLOWN lists the camera as recommended in every format and says in its body doubling guide that you can join with it off [1, 2]. The Deep Dive and Take Off formats do need a microphone, because you speak during the check in [1].
Focusmate requires the camera on for the whole session [5].
Choose FLOWN if
- You want a facilitator running the session and a room you can drop into at any hour.
- Breathwork, planning and journaling sessions are a draw rather than a distraction.
- You prefer the camera optional and a bigger, less personal room.
Choose Focusmate if
- One person waiting for you at a set time is what makes you start.
- You want the lower price, or the free plan is enough.
- You like a simple 25 or 50 minute block with no programme around it.
A free option with no camera and no schedule
Roomie Cafe is ours. Press a timer, see which friends are focusing right now, and write one line when it ends. No camera, no microphone, no booking and no facilitator, and free with no session limit. It is lighter than both tools above, which suits people who mainly want daily company, and it works alongside either for the days you want more structure.
